BOUND BY INTENT. Poet and novelist Edgar Samar says that works like Francisco Balagtas' 'Florante at Laura', Jose Rizal's 'Noli Me Tangere', and Ellen Sicat's 'Unang Ulan ng Mayo' differ in form but share the same intent: To provide moments of introspection.

Even the layman would say that a world of difference exists between a novel and a poem. While the former is known for its multiple characters and twisiting plots, the latter is known for its brevity and the intensity of its emotion.
But in a lecture organized by the Pinoypoets entitled “Niloloob ng Nobela ang Tula: O ang Makata bilang Nobelista”, poet and novelist Edgar Samar tries to find a common ground between the two in the context of our nation’s history.

The University of the Philippines is famous for its big — no make that, enormous campus, sitting on almost 500 hectares of land in Quezon City. Going around the campus can be daunting and students have UP’s unique jeepney system called Ikot and Toki to thank for.
Ikot and Toki are indeed making things easier for the UP community, but it doesn’t for the environment. As an alternative, a new transportation mode in the university has been set up, creating a whole new green and efficient lifestyle for students and teachers.

THE “K” SOUND CONFUSION
One of the special characteristics of the English language is that different symbols and symbols combinations can make the same sound. A typical example is the “k…” sound that can be made by “k”, “c’ and “q” as heard in “key”, “camel” and “mosque”.
Spelling problems arise especially with “k” and “c” and for this reason 4S teaches three special spelling keys. It is important to know to begin with that whether a word is spelt with a “c” or a “k” is usually determined by the vowel that follows the consonant and also by its position in a word.

DEAR CHICO AND DELAMAR... My friend Brad and I have known each other since high school, and early into my college years I found myself developing a slight crush on him. By the time the two of us had graduated I knew that my feelings for him had grown into something more.
When I found out that he felt the same for me, I was elated. I was quickly brought down to earth, though, when he told me that he didn’t date. Rather than do that, we would just hang out together whenever we could find time out from our respective jobs. After doing that for about six months, he suddenly surprises me by proposing to me! I said yes, and we’ve been very happy with how things are going right now.
I thought that I didn’t have a problem with this, but a recent get-together with family and friends got me to thinking. When I told them that I was engaged to Brad, they were initially happy for me, until they found out that I’ve never gone out on a date with him. Now they feel that I’m going into this thing a little too quickly.
We may never have gone out on a “date” date, but we know almost everything about each other because we’ve been friends for so long. I know that I love him and that he loves me too, and I still plan on marrying him. How should I handle this without getting upset at my friends and family? -Linda
